Prepare Your Pool for a Hurricane

While hurricane season officially runs from June 1 until November 30, the peak of the season is between August and October.  Staying safe starts with having a plan for your personal safety, your pets', your home, and your pool.  When a hurricane is anticipated, you have time to prepare and put your plan into effect. In regards to your pool, let's go over 6 tips that will keep your pool as safe as possible.

Do not drain your pool. Water in the pool provides the weight needed to keep the pool in the ground. An empty pool can float or pop out of the ground due to the pressure from excessive ground water caused by heavy rains.

Turn the power off. Circuit breakers at the main electrical panel should be turned off. This includes pump motors, lighting, chlorinators, and heaters.

Protect your electric pool equipment by wrapping the pump motor, time clock, light transformers, and electric heaters with waterproof plastic. Tie them securely in place to prevent sand and water from entering.  If flooding is expected, disconnect these devices and store them in a dry place.

Remove loose items such as chairs, tables, toys, and pool toys that can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. It is best to store these items inside. Avoid throwing furniture into the pool, unless it is a last resort.

Add extra chlorine to the pool.  This prevents contamination from debris and excessive storm water.

Do not cover your pool during a hurricane.  Hurricanes can cause falling branches and other debris that can damage pool covers. It is easier to remove debris from the pool than it is to replace a cover (and much less expensive).
